Pennsylvania Ballet Le Corsaire

This painting of the Pennsylvania Ballet production of Le Corsair shows the ballerina floating across the stage. The characters in the background made the scene of a Turkish market come to life. I was influenced to paint this image because of the Marc Chagall paintings I can think of depict animals and persons in the sky.

This painting is inspired by the change of scenery after the intermission, the dancers off to the side, and the spectacular dance which happens center stage. The princesses and the expressions on the faces, or the body language, of the other dancers as the central figures compete for attention.

This painting is inspired by the garden scene, act III. The pattern of the whole ensemble and the use of wreaths to create a natural environment were happening across the entire stage. By drawing in the audience I try to predict the most important gestures and movements. The lines of legs and the directional movement of the dancers' arms create a group of dancers moving in sync with one another. The line drawings using charcoal are left alone, and added color in the wreaths show the impact of this dance, The swan dance in the garden.
